Fajã da Caldeira do Santo Cristo

Grená - Pico do Ferro - São Miguel PRC22SMI

Trail Info

This circular route, with 6,2 km, develops along pastures converted in forest areas, passing by the lake and hot springs, where the traditional Cozido das Furnas (typical meal made underground) is done.

The trail begins at the viewpoint of Pico do Ferro, with a view over the lake and the valley of Furnas. Go down the concrete road and turn left crossing a gate that gives access to a dirt road. After 600 m, turn right by a bridge surrounded by Japanese cedars (Criptomeria japonica) leading to the “Enchanted Forest”, a forest mosaic that conciliates tree production with the preservation of nature. Here, there is a shortcut that links the trail to Grená.

Follow the marks along an area of old pastures, where several research projects of protection, ecological and landscape recovery of the hydrographic basin of Furnas Lake, are being developed.  At this stage of the walk, it is possible to observe a huge variety of endemic and native flora of the Azores, such as the Laurus tinus (Viburnum treleasei), Azores Laurel (Laurus azorica), Azorean Heather (Erica azorica), Common Heather (Calluna vulgaris) and also a relatively common fauna of the archipelago, like the Buzzard (Buteo buteo rothschildi), Common Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs moreletti), European Robin (Erithacus rubecula) and the Goldcrest (Regulus regulus azoricus).

Before descending to the lake, along the mountain range, there are several points with wide views over the hydrographic basin of Furnas where you can profit to rest. The descending stage develops in a Japanese cedar wood, where you can find some exotic species like the Australian Cheesewood (Pittosporum undulatum), Yellow Ginger Lily (Hedychium gardneranum) and the Tree Fern (Cyathea cooperi).

Before reaching the lake, you can see the ruins of the Grená property, an ancient manor house, nowadays belonging to the Government. At the end of the descend there is a wooden sculpture of a hiker, place where you should turn left towards the hot springs of Furnas lake. Here there is a connection, on your right, with the trail PRC 06 SMI – Lagoa das Furnas.

Continue until you find the area of the hot springs, where the traditional Cozido is done, using the volcanic steam. Keep on going, passing by a picnic area and turn left to Pico do Ferro. On the way up to the wood, there is a track that passes inside a water line and the ground can be slippery and we advise some caution. At the end, profit to rest and enjoy the view from the place where you start the trail.
