Trail Info

*NOTE: THERE IS WORK IN PROGRESS TO CHANGE THE PATH NEAR FAJÃ DOS BODES. (IN THIS PLACE, IN CASE OF STORMY SEA, AVOID THE ROLLED PEBBLE)

This route begins in Fajã dos Vimes by a quay and an old fountain.

Start by walking the dirt trail to Fajã dos Bodes, passing by a watercourse. After walking by this fajã [strip of land by the sea], continue along the path, which climbs to Lourais amid Australian cheesewood (Pittosporum undulatum) and fire trees (Morella faya).

There are viewpoints overlooking the south coast fajãs along the way, and the islands of Pico and Faial. As you climb, you will pass by some watercourses.

About midway through the route, follow a sign and turn right to Fajã de São João until you reach a road. Turn right and after 500m continue along a dirt trail, crossing a watercourse.

From here, go down the path that will take you to Fajã de São João. On arrival at this fajã, cross a bridge near a small pebble beach and proceed over cobblestone between the houses until you reach the Ermida de São João [St. John’s Chapel], the end of this route.
